Cannabis 101: A Beginner's Guide
If you're new to cannabis, this guide covers the basics to help you make informed choices and have a safe, enjoyable experience.
THC vs. CBD: What's the Difference?
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary compound that produces the "high" or psychoactive effects associated with cannabis. CBD (cannabidiol) is non-intoxicating and is known for potential calming and soothing properties. Many products contain a combination of both. When choosing products, pay attention to the THC and CBD percentages listed — higher THC means stronger psychoactive effects.
Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid: What Do They Mean?
Indica strains are traditionally associated with relaxing, body-focused effects — often chosen for evening use. Sativa strains are associated with energizing, uplifting effects — often preferred for daytime use. Hybrid strains are a cross between the two and can lean either way. Individual experiences may vary, so consider starting with a hybrid if you're unsure.
Consumption Methods
Smoking (flower/pre-rolls): Effects felt within 5–15 minutes. Easiest to control your dose because you feel it quickly. Start with 1–2 puffs and wait before taking more.
Vaping (cartridges/disposables): Similar onset to smoking (5–15 minutes). Produces less odor and is more portable. Same dosing advice — start with 1–2 puffs.
Edibles (gummies, chocolates, drinks): Effects take 30–90 minutes to kick in and can last 4–8 hours. This is the most important thing to know about edibles: start low (2.5–5mg THC) and wait at least 2 hours before taking more. Many first-time users make the mistake of eating more because they don't feel it right away.
Tinctures (drops under the tongue): Effects typically felt within 15–45 minutes. Place drops under your tongue and hold for 30–60 seconds before swallowing. Allows for precise dosing.
Topicals (creams, balms): Applied to the skin for localized relief. Generally no psychoactive high. Good for targeted use without intoxicating effects.
Dosing Tips for Beginners
The golden rule of cannabis dosing is: "Start low, go slow."
Smoking/Vaping: Take 1–2 small puffs. Wait 10–15 minutes to gauge the effects before having more.
Edibles: Start with 2.5–5mg of THC. Wait at least 2 full hours before considering another dose. Effects from edibles are stronger and longer-lasting than smoking.
Tinctures: Start with the lowest recommended dose on the product packaging.
What to Expect
Common effects of cannabis include feelings of relaxation, euphoria, increased appetite, altered perception of time, and heightened senses. Some people may experience dry mouth, red eyes, or mild anxiety — especially at higher doses. If you feel uncomfortable, remember that the effects are temporary. Find a comfortable space, stay hydrated, and relax. The effects will pass.
Safety Tips
Don't drive or operate machinery while using cannabis.
Store products securely away from children and pets.
Stay hydrated and have snacks on hand.
Know your limits — there's no rush. You can always try a higher dose next time.
California Cannabis Laws
In California, recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21 and over. Medical cannabis patients must be 18+ with a valid recommendation. Cannabis cannot be consumed in public places, in vehicles, or within 1,000 feet of schools or youth centers while children are present. Always consume responsibly and in compliance with local laws.
